Winter, you either love it or you hate it -the days are getting shorter, the temperature is getting cooler and its harder to get out of bed in the morning. With the colder days come the dreaded flu season which means sniffly noses and avoiding anyone that sneezes in your direction. We all try our best to prevent getting sick but majority of us still end up getting knocked down, so it’s time to fight back with these sniffle busting tips.
Regular, moderate exercise can actually boost your immunity by decreasing stress, flushing out toxins from the body and improving sleep. Simply going for a 30 minute walk can do wonders for your mind, body and soul.
We all know how important it is to stay hydrated - drinking between 1.5 - 2 liters of water helps kidney function and flushes out unwanted toxins. If you find it difficult to drink enough water, opt for herbal teas as they provide you with extra benefits and taste great. (Our Echinacea Boost contains not only echinacea but also elderberry. Great combo to improve your immunity)
While more sleep won’t necessarily prevent you from getting sick, lack of it could adversely affect your immune system and leave you run down. While we sleep our bodies produce key proteins (cytokines) that help fight infections and inflammation. If we don’t get enough sleep, our bodies are unable to produce as many of these bad boys which means increased chances of getting sick. Try to aim for 8-9 hours of sleep per night.
Did you know that 80% of your immune system lives in your gut? Make sure you eat a balanced and varied diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, etc (they contain special fibres that feed the good bacteria in your gut). For and extra boost, spice up your dishes with garlic, ginger, turmeric and cayenne pepper, you can also add lemon to your water to add extra flavour and vitamins. Of course we can’t forget adding gut loving prebiotics and probiotics (our Alkalising Greens contain both).
