Sip Your Way to Wellness (Literally) – The Importance of Hydration

We’ve all heard about the importance of water but do we TRULY understand how vital this humble liquid is? Water is needed for absolutely every important process in the body. Everything from the digestion of food, absorption and transportation of nutrients to energy production, removal of waste and regulation of temperature. Even the slightest amount of dehydration can cause physical and mental performance impairment.

Staying hydrated has enormous advantages for every inch of your body. Keeping up your water intake will boost your brain function, improve memory and enhance concentration. Not only can this liquid gold reduce fatigue but it will increase your energy levels to keep you motivated and be able to breeze through your day. Physically, the right amount of h2O helps to regulate the body temperature by sweating to cool the body down. This could cause glowy skin in a less permanent way 😉 however hydrated skin radiates from the inside out and can help to even out your complexion! The benefits of staying well-hydrated are endless, from improved sleep quality and increased bowel movements to the removal of toxins from the body.

Okay, that’s enough about all the benefits – let’s get down to the nitty-gritty, how much h2O is enough? Everyone’s water needs can vary greatly depending on activity level, humidity and temperature of the environment, life stage and medical conditions. As an average goal, a typical adult should aim to consume between 2,500-3,000ml of water a day. This may sound like a lot, but there are countless ways to consume your water intake without downing 35 glasses of water a day.

Increasing your hydration status is EASY! Some great ways to spruce up your water intake could include adding fruits to your water, adding water to a smoothie or making a fresh juice. And not all your water needs to be consumed as liquid, fruits such as berries, melons and grapes or vegetables such as cucumbers, cauliflower and spinach all have a high water content to help you up your water intake. By breaking up your consumption throughout the day it will be much more manageable and enjoyable to have! If you struggle to keep track of how much water you’ve had, there are even apps that can track your water intake to ensure you reach your goal.

A great way to tell if you’re hitting your water goals is by the colour of your urine - the paler your urine, the more hydrated you are! This isn’t always 100% accurate as different factors including medication can alter this, so an increase in thirst, a dry mouth, infrequent urination, dry skin or dizziness and headaches are also great indicators.
